outliving hendrix

I am a long-time Hendrix fan. Listening to his final show today I noticed that his between song banter was strange and somehow childish. Then I looked it up - Hendrix was 27 when he died. Now playing: Jimi Hendrix - Room Full Of Mirrors

what is it about f1 bosses?

+ According to Pitpass.com (which has an RSS feed ) Ferrari team manager Jean Todt is engaged to Hong Kong action star Michelle Yeoh.Apparently Flavio isn't the only team boss with lady-skills.

living the movie - office space

They announced our new seating plans today. Basically I'm getting moved from a coveted semi-private window spot to a deep into the building middle cube, middle row. Of course I proceed to gripe loudly about it and Vinod quotes Milton and it hits me -- I'm living the movie. [Scene: Milton’s cubicle, under the banner. He’s on the phone with Peter.]Milton: I, I don’t care if they, if they lay me off either, because I, I told Bill that if he moves my desk one more time, then, then I’m quitting. I’m going to quit. And I told Dom too...

chess for girls

Hugh has a story of the history of chess pieces on his site gapingvoid.com. Apparently it comes via a drunk Scottish guy in a pub. Chess pieces are wee representations of ancient warfare. Somehow I was reminded of playing Battle Chess as a kid. Here are some kick-ass EGA screenshots.   Click the one on the right to zoom Title is a SNL reference to a skit where "chess for girls" was like my little pony and you dressed the pieces up and put makeup on them etc.

auto-correct for MSN IM

Years and years of heavy reliance on MS Word's auto-correct and red squiggly spell-check means any time I type anything that doesn't get fixed for me I blame it on the program. I dug this up today. I use MSN Messenger Plus! a MSN add-in that adds a whole bunch of extra features to the regular MSN client. One feature is word filtering. The main intent is so your foul mouthed friend's rants can be set to show up as "<f-word>", etc. Well somebody had a good idea, took Microsoft Word's auto-correct list and turned it into a registry file to import the list into the program. So now whenever I invariably spell common words incorrectly it...

direct iraq

At some point or another I signed up for the official Kerry email newsletter. Today I get one simply titled "Iraq". I start reading and it is pretty well written and clear. Then I realize the scroll bar thinger is awfully small. Print preview reveals it is nine printed pages long!I couldn't find the text online, so I posted it here: http://www.coreyh.com/blog/articles/802.aspx

screenshot fun

Here is what my desktop looked like at 9pm on a Wednesday night at work. I run two 19" CRT monitors each at 1600 x 1200 resolution and I wish I had more. The beauty of having this much space is that I keep certain things in fixed positions always visible. On the second monitor, the one on the right, you'll see that Winamp - it never moves. Outlook tasks and calendar are open as separate windows (did you know you could do that?) and I leave them in exactly the same place all the time. I spend a whole lot less...

ihop withdrawl

One of the great things about my college experience in Boston (BU) was the nearly 24 hour International House of Pancakes located in Kenmore Square - a short walk from my apartment. A stack of steaming pancakes at 2:30 AM is a wonderful wonderful thing. For all that NYC offers, there is no IHOP presence. Sure there are diners that technically serve pancakes too, but it isn't the same. Where are the five syrup flavors? Where's the country omlette or the Rooty-tooty-fresh-n-fruity? Or that chocolate one with the face made from whip cream and whatnot? Today I found this via...

forged or not forged memo

This is an animated gif of the "forged" memo overlayed with the original. I’m not convinced. Here are my arguments against forgery. Times New Roman was undoubtedly created from a standard font that existed from way back in typewriter days. MS didn't invent it, they just made it look exactly like the standard. Not convincing. The proportionality is probably a similar thing. Microsoft wanted to engineer word to work like real docs people were used to, not the other way around. Note the horizontal alignment of the characters on the original, they hit the page at slightly different heights. The MS word version hits exactly.I...

pink is more than just a color

I ran in the Susan Korman breast cancer race this morning. My initial goal of being the quickest finisher from my company was pretty well dashed when I showed up to find a lean, 6'2" employee from Africa who insisted on being at the extreme front of the start and when asked replied "oh yes, I'm fast." 5k isn't that far. There is so much going on you really don't have a lot of time to settle into a pace or allow nagging pains to slow you too much. Around 400 meters from the finish I spotted the ringer ahead. Throwing...

no limit hold 'em for smartphone

Even though I am teased for having a fancy phone that has trouble making calls and staying connected, the functionality is still quite nice. Witness - No Limit Texas Hold 'em for SmartPhone. I've got it installed and have been playing. The players are randomly assigned playing styles, loose, tight, etc. There isn't nearly as much psychological play as in real poker, but it definitely helps hone the statistical aspect of the game. I kindof wish you could see the other player's faces. As it stands I can't remember which ones are playing tight or loose. [via Mpx200.org] Hey this reminds...

linux distribution chooser v0.2

Handy website tool to figure out which of the 100s of Linux distributions you might want to try. I've mentioned before that I toy around with Gentoo, but based on the chooser I should be on Mandrake. I downloaded and installed it today. The installer is obviously far far far better than Gentoo's, but I managed to have kde crash on me several times in various ways within the first few minutes. The auto-updater package thing choked badly as well. Linux Distribution Chooser v0.2[via OSNews]

would wal-mart manhattan do well?

File this under 'stuff people used to send around via email, but is now slightly less annoying because it is on a blog, and it is ok because it is kindof funny'. All that follows is ripped directly from the source. Some Wal-Mart customers will soon be able to sample a new discount item: Wal-Mart's own brand of wine. The world's largest retail chain is teaming up with E&J Gallo Winery of Modesto, California, to produce the spirits at an affordable price, in the $2-5 range. While wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to throw a bottle of Wal-Mart brand wine...

Chechnee who

If you found yourself wondering "gee, I wonder how all this Chechnya stuff comes from" after reading about the school-terror-standoff, the editors of Slate have prepared this handy one-page recap of the whole history. So, what does al-Qaida and international Islamic terrorism have to do with any of this? Probably very little. Chechens have plenty of reason to do what they do without outside inspiration. In addition, their tactics are very different from al-Qaida's. Osama Bin Laden's group generally aims for maximum casualties; the Chechens, at least when they have staged hostage-takings, have not seemed to have that goal. Al-Qaida...

Desktop search... so hot right now... Desktop search [Quoted from]I started out with Lookout. Moved up to X1 (@ $99). Now comes Copernic Desktop Search. I've installed it and it looks very nice I have to say. X1's search is incredibly fast, but the user interface is awkward and slow. Now I'm torn yet again. Of course Google is feverishly working on their product. [rumor]This is why MS needs to step up and deliver something soon. I really dislike having all these competing choices where they all do stuff I like, but nobody does everything I want. I would rather Microsoft come up...
